Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving and emerging technology that is increasingly influencing health care practice. While regulatory frameworks are still developing, the responsibility for the safe, ethical, and appropriate use of AI-powered tools rests with individual practitioners.
AI tools can be helpful, provided those tools are implemented with a full understanding of AI-related risks and how to mitigate them. Understanding AI is essential to the safe, competent, and ethical use of AI-powered technologies such as automated charting tools (often called digital scribes) within professional practice, as well as the ability to get informed consent from patients for the use of such a tool.
For 2026–27, the College has partnered with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), a globally recognized leader in AI, to provide high-quality, practical training about responsible AI.
All regulated members are required to complete the 3-hour course, Responsible AI 1, on Amii’s learning platform as part of this year’s Continuing Competence Program (CCP). Upon completion, members will receive 3 CCP credits.
To support registrants, the College has secured preferred pricing and will also cover 50% of the course cost for every regulated member. Members will pay $37 + GST to Amii when registering through the College. This fee provides full access to Amii’s learning platform for 1 year, allowing members to explore additional AI-related courses at no extra cost—many of which are also eligible for CCP credits.
Members must complete Responsible AI 1 and submit their certificate of completion as part of their renewal in March 2027.
