Creation of the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta: The acupuncture profession has been regulated in Alberta since 1989 under the Health Disciplines Act. The profession is governed by Ministerial committees rather than a designated association as are the other professions under the HDA. In 1993 the Alberta government proposed changes to health professions legislation, seeking to govern all health professions in Alberta under one act, the Health Professions Act (the HPA). In May of 1999 the HPA became law and all health professions undertook the process of transferring to the HPA. This legislation did not provide for professions to be governed by Ministerial committees but rather required self governing bodies. This represented a significant shift in regulatory status for the Acupuncture profession and necessitated the creation of a new body. In November of 2006 the interim council of the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAAA) was created through a collaboration between three professional associations related to the Acupuncture profession in Alberta: the Acupuncture Society of Alberta, the Alberta Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors, and the Canadian Health Professions Acupuncture Society (see list of members in left margin).
Vision Statement: The CAAA is committed to excellence in regulation and support of the Registered Acupuncturists of Alberta. Mission Statement: The CAAA serves the public interest and supports the acupuncture profession by setting high standards of practice, education, competence and ethical conduct. |
